ENGAGEMENT WITH INDUSTRY
What I’ve Done
March 2021
ELLIOTT GREEN TALK
Elliott Green, who founded the Raindance Film Festival and The British Independent Film Awards, gave a talk to my university in early 2021. It was fascinating hearing the people whom he had an effect on throughout his career, including Christopher Nolan! His tips on entering film festivals and the purpose of them in the industry was incredibly insightful and will certainly stick with me throughout my career. The talk was presented via Zoom (the joys of a Pandemic I guess).

SCREENOLOGY: MAKE FILMS HAPPEN SUMMER SCHOOL
The summer school was my most extensive engagement with the industry and certainly the most in-depth. Over the course of two months, I would meet every morning on zoom with around 50 other students of a similar age to have lessons with industry professionals. The classes ranged from developing characters and stories to working on Foley and sound production. Their aim was to help students like myself develop their skills and offer feedback during the pandemic and it was something I was very grateful to be a part of.

INTO FILM
Into Film is a London based company that aims to bring younger more accessible audiences opportunities to interview filmmakers and actors about their experience on set and life making films. The programme aims to accept about 20 students between the ages of 13 and 18. Although ultimately I was unsuccessful in this process I was brought to London for an interview day. The day included talking to like-minded individuals about film and film production and what we would all ultimately like from our experience in the industry.

BFI TALKS
I attended multiple BFI talks in early 2019, each of varying topics and in several different cinemas across Bristol. Perhaps the one I found most engaging was a screening of the documentary made about the difference the class system has in a creative environment. The experience allowed us after the screening to discuss with the director what we liked about the film and how and why they ultimately made it.
